The character and charm of the castle and the natural beauty of the rural setting makes Markree Castle the perfect place to say "I do". Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sligo Countryside, Markree castle is located in the North West of Ireland on the route of the Wild Atlantic Way. A beauitful and private setting, the castle overlooks a large countryside estate on the banks of the river Unshin. Reopened in Spring 2017 as an exclusive private hire venue, Markree Castle is a fantastic place for a destination wedding in Ireland. The privacy of guests is ensured by the extensive estate and the castles countryside location. The elegance and drama of the castle buildings are matched by the landscape surrounding Markree which is full of natural beauty; green fields, rolling hills, woodland and river are set against Sligo’s dramatic backdrop of mountains and roaring seas. The castle at Markree was built in the early 17th Century by Cornet Edward Cooper who served under Cromwell. It remained in the Cooper family ownership until 2014 when it was bought by its current owners, The Corscadden Family. Markree Castle now opens for private weddings and exclusive events and can cater for up to 190 guests for a sit down meal. Grandeur from the Moment of your Arrival After driving under the gothic arches of the gate lodge at Markee Castle, you are greeted by the traditional avenue of a grand country estate. Banked by green fields and ancient trees you have arrived into a different world; you are a guest of the big house. Markree Castle was built with entertaining in mind. At the entrance to the castle, an impressive staircase leads to the castles Grand Hall. The entrace staircase itself is exquisite and marks the beginning of your journey into the castles gothic architecture with vaulted ceilings and striking arches and handmade and painted cornicing. On your wedding day, your drinks reception will be served amid the rich décor of the Grand Hall, warming period colours, rich reds and strong blues complimented by a roaring wood fire. Take a mintue to absorb the comfort and warmth of the real fire and notice the reclaimed hardwood fireplace, which was resuced from a stable, identified using national archives records and reinstated to a position more fititng of its style and history. Your private wedding venue, guests can roam the gardens and enjoy the antique furnished reception rooms of the castle throughout the drinks reception. The comfort of the library is a favourite with beautiful views of the manicured lawns and rose garden.
