About Us Strawberry Hill House & Garden, built by politician and writer Horace Walpole in the 18th century, is an extraordinary and internationally famous building that is Britain’s finest example of Georgian Gothic revival architecture. Inspired by medieval architecture, Horace Walpole built this 'fairy tale castle' as his summer villa - complete with castle-like battlements, a cathedral inspired cloister, a sweeping landscaped garden and a sparkling interior with gold ceilings and stunning stained glass. Today, the 'Long Gallery' inside Strawberry Hill is licensed for civil ceremonies, so couples and guests can enjoy Strawberry Hill's astounding architectural beauty during their wedding celebrations. Lady Frances Waldegrave, renowned for her lavish, high-society parties, expanded the house in the 19th century with grand rooms designed for entertaining - and even influenced the building of Strawberry Hill Rail Station so her elite guests could travel effortlessly from London. Today, this is where we host the wedding receptions rich in character in the Waldegrave Suite. Facilities and Capacity Ceremonies take place in The Gallery , a breathtaking space with rich red and gold detailing. With its dramatic interiors and historic charm, The Gallery provides a unique backdrop for exchanging vows. Following the ceremony, guests can step out onto the beautiful grounds for a drinks reception. While the public gardens remain open, wedding parties enjoy a designated, private lawn area to celebrate away from general visitors. The striking white Gothic facade of the house provides a magnificent backdrop for capturing golden hour photos. For the reception, the Grade I listed Waldegrave Suite offers an elegant collection of interconnected spaces, including the Waldegrave Drawing Room , The Senior Common Room , and The Billiard Room . Characterised by impressive chandeliers, silk wallpaper, ornate decor, and tremendously high ceilings, this glamorous building provides a rare glimpse into the past. Couples can host a grand wedding breakfast in the Waldegrave Drawing Room, followed by dancing in the Senior Common Room accompanied by their choice of a live band, DJ, or a curated playlist. To kick off the evening celebrations, newlyweds can make a grand entrance down the feature iron staircase This serves as the ultimate backdrop for an iconic confetti photo. The only comment I could add is that it seems like there were some issues with opening the windows in the room where the evening dancing occurred, and it became very warm in there very quickly. Missing items taken from the venue and lack of a good response from the team and security as to what happened. We are saddened to have to write this review as our overall experience with the Waldgrave Suite was efficient, well organised and our contact was superb to work with in the run up to the wedding and on the day. The food from St Margaret’s University was excellent and the catering staff were also brilliant. Our complaint lies with the lack of safety and security the venue has to offer which is easily accessible to the university. The day before the wedding we were told we would have the whole space to set up and leave our personal things, however there were tours happening throughout our time setting up and strangers wandering through our spaces and being encouraged to take pictures by their guide. On this day my very expensive prescription sun glasses went missing and still have not been returned to me. This was an incredibly stressful way to start our wedding preparations. My husband and I were the last of our guests to leave the venue on the day of the wedding and had left behind some gifts to pick up the next day. Sadly some of there gifts including a very expensive bottle of whisky belonging to the groom late grandad was not there in the morning . There were also presents which had been moved around to other bags and replaced with other gifts. One of the items that was taken was a bright blue bag. When we asked the venue to check the CCTV they were less than enthusiastic to help us get to the bottom of this and deflected the evidence we had give them as “speculative” and deflecting blame on our guests who had already left by the time the items went missing. They said that they hadn’t been able to see a bright blue bag on any of their CCTV. There is CCTV around the building and including the university and we found their unhelpful response alarming. We asked several times to take this situation further with the venue and also to arrange an offical complaint with the venue to and we still haven’t heard back months later. Leaving our only option to leave this review here. We were also sadly dealing with this on our honeymoon. In meetings with the venue I had raised the issue of security on multiple occasions, as I was becoming increasingly aware of how much access strangers would have to our wedding and proximity to our space. It left a bad taste in our mouth on what had been an incredible wedding having our guests ask us if we liked the gifts which we did not receive as they had been removed overnight/early morning.
